What is Re:Culture? (tl;dr version)

Re:Culture is a newsletter by Rachel Christine that explores culture through a personal lens. It is a place where criticism meets hope, and a playground for the cynic and dreamer alike. Most of what I publish falls somewhere on the spectrum of cultural criticism to personal essay, but don’t expect me to play by the rules (even my own!).

Who’s this Rachel person?

Hi, I’m Rachel. Writing bylines is probably one of my biggest triggers for an existential who-even-am-I spiral. At the heart of it all, I’m a millennial woman trying to make sense of who she is and who she wants to be. But if I were you, this is probably what I’d wanna know:

A/S/L?

30-something/ she her pronouns/ England (for over a decade, but I grew up in California)

Where did you study?

I got my DPhil (PhD) in anthropology from the University of Oxford, where I also did a postdoc in bioethics. Previously I studied at NYU, where I received a BA in philosophy.

Cat or dog person?

Cat! I regularly befriend neighborhood cats on daily walks, and I think of myself as a cat whisperer. (In all honestly, I love dogs, too, but they’re more work and infinitely less sassy.)

Favorite book?

Probably Maus by Art Spiegelman. Not only is it a masterpiece, but it’s what got me into comics and graphic memoirs. Hmu if you want some comic recs!

Best show you’ve watched in the last year?

All Of Us Are Dead, a Korean coming-of-age meets zombie apocalypse series. Just trust me.

Biggest fear?

Flying, all things creepy crawly, and globs of mayo. On a more serious note, coming to the end of my life and feeling like I didn’t reach my potential because I got in my own way.

Current obsession?

Formula 1. Well, Lewis Hamilton. If you get me a Grand Prix ticket or Lewis merch OR EVEN BETTER, HELP ME MEET LEWIS (!!!!), I will probably love you forever.

Okay, but what do you actually write?

You can find two types of pieces in Re:Culture: (1) long-ish form essays (2) my 5-4-3-2-1 listicle that’s best described as a culture-roundup-meets-personal-diary. Here are a handful of pieces I’ve published in Re:Culture that will give you a feel for my vibe and what I care about:

Essays:

(No. 6) This is the story where I am the hero: On choosing your own adventure when the bad guys close in

(No. 3) Words I'm not supposed to say: I'm still afraid: Reflections on living with a chronic illness and Covid-19

(No. 4) 'Things I once enjoyed just keep me employed now': Reflections on a Billie Eilish concert, academia, and self-expression

(No. 1) Quit reading that shitty book: Why quitting is your secret super power

(No. 5) A love letter to myself: Written days before my DPhil graduation

5-4-3-2-1 listicles (culture-roundup-meets-personal-diary):

#5: 5-4-3-2-1: Gingerbread houses, Selena Gomez, and Little Moons

#4: 5-4-3-2-1: Dr Rachie, rent is a scam, & karma is a cat

#3: 5-4-3-2-1: Roses, Roe v Wade, and Rafa
